Last night Thursday October 25th we held our Halloween Open Competition and had a fantastic entry and a huge turnout on the night. And for a change we had an external evaluation of our pictures instead of a self-evaluation.
Our new Competitions Secretary took charge for the first time and it was agreed by all in attendance that Miriam Heylin did a superb job in organising and running the competition. The other change to the format was the requirement for a picture title this was displayed along with the picture and from my point of view totally enhanced the competition for me. Perhaps the most memorable title of the night was a picture of a swan with outstretched wings flying which had the title: Ryanair Flight Number FR425. This title provoked the obvious reaction from everyone and made the photograph all the more memorable.
As I don’t have the result yet I will just mention some of the pictures that stood out for me, there was the aforementioned Swan Picture, which in addition to having a great title is was very sharp, well composed and only let down by one of the wings being clipped. A picture of the Ferris Wheel at the local amusements stood out for me because of the very striking colours that were captured and also its composition. The vintage car rally held recently in Blennerville provided two pictures on the night, one which was given a vintage Black & White\ Faded Colours look and the other of a line of the iconic Volkswagen Type 2 Vans, which were both eye-catching because of the colours in the line-up and the composition of the picture.
The other change on the night was an external evaluation and last nights was provided by John Stack a friend of Dillon Boyer, founder member of Listowel Camera Club and teacher of photography to second level students. For me in my three and a half years membership of the club it was the most superb and comprehensive evaluation of photographs we have had. John took the time to offer his opinion on each photograph; the critique was very fair and showed us ways to improve our photographs for the future. He also stressed the importance of having an appropriate title for our picture and proved it for us by his mention of the Swan Picture title.
The Halloween Open Competition and all other competitions from now on will be split into two categories; Novice and Advanced with prizes for first and second in each. The result of last year’s Photographer of the Year Competition will be the basis of the split with additional tweaking by the committee.
John Stack will be along again for our next meeting scheduled for the 8th of November where he will present a slideshow of his transition year students. For further information visit our website at http://ardfertcameraclub.weebly.com
