Christmas is almost upon us and consequently last night was our last meeting of 2012 with the next meeting to be held on Thursday January 10th. A themed competition was held and we also had a question and answer session at last night meeting and agreement was reached on an outing during the Christmas Break.
The themed “What makes me happy!” competition attracted 23 entries. It turned up shots of places, hobbies, animals and family members. From the point of view of the author, there were a few stand out shots. My favourite was titled “My Soul Mate Storm Watching”, it was a beach scene with a person standing toward the centre of the picture looking out at a very dramatic sky and approaching storm clouds. Another memorable picture was of a close of a pony open mouth that appears to be smiling and given the apt title “Is this smile big enough for you?” The third picture that impressed me was of a local scene. Donal Dowling took a picture of his neighbour’s garden which had its shrubs burnt by the bad winters of 2009 and 2010. The neighbour has painted these dead bushes a number of striking and different colours. Donal managed to get a picture of this scene with an equally vivid sky which created a very eye pleasing and effective shot.
During the question and answer session we discussed, shooting in raw, Photoshop and the use of filters. It was decided to have a workshop on basic Photoshop techniques at our next meeting in January. We have planned to have an outing to the Black Valley Area on Friday December 28th if the weather permits. We will meet at O’Donnell’s in Mounthawk Tralee at 10 am and car pool before proceeding to Molls Gap and making our way back to the Gap of Dungloe in the evening. We will pair an experienced photographer with every 3 or 4 less experienced members.
Finally just to remind people to bring along their Still Life photographs for critique at our next meeting. For further information visit our website at http://ardfertcameraclub.weebly.com
