_ Early last Sunday morning about 10 of us eager snappers met at O’Donnell’s Pub in Mounthawk and proceeded to Ross Castle in Killarney before daybreak. Those who travelled were rewarded with some beautiful shots of the boat moorings adjacent to the castle and in fact 2 of the shots made the top 5 in our Open competition. The more experienced members were on hand to help the newer members with composing the shots and on the selection of appropriate apertures and shutter speeds. After exhausting all of the possibilities in the Ross Castle area we travelled to Torc Waterfall which was in full spate and gave us the opportunity to record milky white water when we set uour cameras to shoot at slow shutter speeds. We have already forgiven those who promised faithfully (the Ed springs to mind) to rise early, but didn’t!

We held out second Open Competition of the season and we had a record equalling 26 entries and our well-travelled membership took their pictures as far away as the California coast, Utah and the coast of Greenland. To see all of the entries pop along to our website at http://ardfertcameraclub.weebly.com/competition-winners.html. In first place we had Dillon Boyer, whose entry was taken in Bryce Canyon in Utah USA; the second place went to new member Joe Hennessy who picture was taken at the Air Show during the Rose of Tralee festival last year. The third place spot went to Maura Miller for her picture of a song thrush. After 7 rounds Dillon Boyer tops the Photographer of the Year Competition with 77 points, followed in second place by Tommy Toomey with 56 points and 3 people in joint third with 44 points, namely Steve Baker, Maura Miller and Shane Turner.

An extra meeting has been added for the 8th of December, this will be a party and fun night, we will have some finger food and Patrick Wolff has lined up a slide show of abandoned buildings in the Ardfert and Banna area. Then we break for Christmas and return on the 12th of January 2012 and our theme for that night in Low Light\Night Photography.

In this article I will talk a little about White Balance. Have you noticed that the colours in your pictures don’t look correct, well this is because the white balance has not been sensed correctly by your camera. Different light sources have different colours or temperatures for example, bright sunlight has a different colour to a cloudy sky, notice the orange skies in the morning and tungsten bulbs have a different (warmer) temperature to those lit by a fluorescent (cooler) bulbs. Our eyes can compensate for these differences in colour\temperature DSLR’s and many point and shoot cameras allow the user to change the white balance which will result in pictures that look more natural but also some very interesting effects are possible by selecting white balances that are much different to the actual temperature.

_ We just had our second meeting using the projector and we made some changes to improve the flow of the meeting. Firstly we decided to count the votes after the meeting had ended and put up the results on our club website ardfertcameraclub.weebly.com/competition-winners.html. This allowed all of the people present to fully participate in the meeting. This gave us the freedom to show some training videos to the people present and the feedback is that all of the people enjoyed the new format very much.

We had a record breaking 26 entries in our “By the Sea” themed competition and all of the top three entries were taken in our own beautiful county. In first place with 198 points was new members Mike Brosnan’s stunning shot taken on Rossbeigh beach. The second spot on 196 points went to Patrick Wolff, his shot was taken from a high vantage point and took in Barrow Harbour, Fenit Lighthouse and the Slieve Mish Mountain Range. Brian Fitzgerald got 194 points for his picture of the Blasket Island known as Dead Man, or An Fear Marbh and also known as the Sleeping Giant

The theme for the next completion is Open and they will be a €5 entry fee and there will double points and points awarded to 20 places, this could make a huge difference to the point tally for photographer of the year. At present the top 3 spot are taken by Dillon Boyer on 55 points, Tommy Toomey on 44 and Steve Baker on 36.

An outing is scheduled for this coming weekend to the Ross Castle area of Killarney, it will be an early start but a short day and will only go ahead if the weather permits. We meet at O’Donnell’s pub in Mounthawk Tralee where we will carpool.

Here are some Camera Tips that are invaluable:

  2. “Learn Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO first. Stay on Manual. Shoot Raw.” – Alfredo Avila
  3. “Don’t Buy the Kit Lens!” – Shari Schoeman
  4. “Don’t be afraid of taking bad pictures.” – John Ireland
  5. “Practice, practice, practice. Art is interpreted individually. But have fun experimenting!” – Jonathan McGill

Another record breaking meeting of the club was held on the 27th of October, we had an attendance of 27 to witness the first use of our new projector in a competition. We had 23 entries in our Autumn themed competition which was won by Ian Willey who has just returned from another one of his trips abroad and of course he fortuitously happened to be in New England in the Fall and captured the stunning picture alongside this article.

Second place in the competition went to Dillon Boyer for a shot taken in the Lake District and newcomer Shane Turner came in third place with a picture of Torc Waterfall. The next meeting is scheduled for November 10th and the theme is “By the Sea”, please send your entries to francis.foley@live.ie by Tuesday November 8th.

Unfortunately the weather wrecked our last planned outing at the last minute, however the club is planning to hold at least one outing before the Christmas break probably to the Killarney Area. At this outing we will pair experienced and new members together to that the beginners will learn from the more experience people.

This week I will talk a little about the ISO system, before the advent of digital cameras, film could be purchased in a number of sensitivities such as ISO 100, 200 and 400 etc. The higher the figure the more sensitive the film however there is a trade-off in that the more sensitive film produces a grainer image. The digital camera sensor can be adjusted to make it more or less sensitive to light and they have kept the same ISO system for rating the sensitivity and again higher sensitivity will give you noisier images with less definition of fine feature in the picture. Therefore to take the best quality shots use as low an ISO rating as possible.
